Ingredients

Chocolate chip snickerdoodles are something everyone will love. The combination of chewy cookies, chocolate chips, and cinnamon sugar is simply divine! Check out the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact measurements.

  • All-purpose flour: The snickerdoodles have the right amount of flour to give them the perfect soft texture.
  • Granulated sugar adds sweetness and structure to the cookies. We also need it for rolling the snickerdoodles.
  • Cream of tartar and baking soda leaven these cookies and contribute to the slightly tangy taste and chewiness.
  • Salted butter: Make sure it’s softened to room temperature. If you’d prefer to use unsalted butter, simply add 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • Eggs bind the cookie dough and give the snickerdoodles an extra chewy texture. Make sure they are at room temperature as well.
  • Chocolate chips: I used a combination of milk and semisweet chocolate chips in this snickerdoodle recipe, but you can definitely use just one flavor or bittersweet instead.
  • Cinnamon: Snickerdoodles are not complete without being coated in cinnamon sugar.

How to make chocolate chip snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodle cookies with chocolate chips will become your new holiday favorite. I dare you to stop at just one cookie. Let’s go over the recipe step-by-step:

#1: Mix cookie dough

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  • Add the eggs and beat until well combined, scraping down the sides of the mixing bowl as needed.
  • Slowly pour the flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda into the bowl with the mixer on low. Mix until just combined.

#2: Fold in chocolate chips

  • Fold the chocolate chips in the cookie dough using a large spoon or spatula until evenly distributed throughout.

#3: Roll snickerdoodles

  • Use a medium cookie scoop to portion the cookie dough. Roll each portion into a ball between your palms, then roll in the cinnamon sugar until well coated.

#4: Bake & cool cookies

  • Place the dough balls on parchment-lined cookie sheets and bake at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes, until puffed up and just golden.
  • Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheets before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely. Enjoy!

Tips for the best snickerdoodles

My chocolate chip snickerdoodle recipe is pretty simple, and here are some tips to help yours turn out perfect!

  • Measure the flour correctly: Adding too much flour is the most common mistake. The best way to measure is by using a digital scale. If you don’t have one, fluff the flour with a spoon, sprinkle it into your measuring cup, and use a knife to level off.
  • Room temperature ingredients: Ensure that cold ingredients like butter and eggs are at room temperature. This will create the best textured cookies.
  • Avoid overmixing: Overmixing the cookie dough can make the chocolate chip snickerdoodles come out dense and crumbly.
  • Chill the dough: If your kitchen is on the warmer side, the dough might be sticky and not roll into a ball. If that’s the case, chill the dough for 30 minutes to an hour. I recommend rolling the dough in batches, keeping half of the dough in the refrigerator.
  • Don’t roll in cinnamon sugar until you’re ready to bake: You can chill the cookie dough overnight, but don’t roll your snickerdoodles into balls and coat with cinnamon sugar until you are ready to bake.
  • Add extra cinnamon sugar: If you love cinnamon sugar, spoon some over each snickerdoodle dough ball before baking. You’ll get way more cinnamon than if you just roll them.

  • Chai spice mix: Use chai spice mix instead of cinnamon to make the sugar coating.
  • White chocolate: White chocolate chips go so well with cinnamon sugar and taste fantastic in snickerdoodles. White chocolate chip snickerdoodles are so, so good!
  • Bread flour: For super chewy cookies, replace half the all-purpose flour with bread flour.

FAQ

Why use cream of tartar?

Cream of tartar gives snickerdoodles their iconic tangy taste and chewy texture. It reacts with the baking soda to help the snickerdoodles rise as they bake. Cream of tartar also prevents the granulated sugar from crystallizing, keeping the cookies super soft.

Can I skip cream of tartar?

Baking powder is an excellent substitute for cream of tartar and baking soda. Simply omit the cream of tartar and baking soda and add 2 teaspoons baking powder.

Just note that without cream of tartar, snickerdoodles will turn out similar to sugar cookies, leaning to a crunchier cookie.

Why are my cookies coming out flat?

If your chocolate chip snickerdoodles come out flat, double-check that your cream of tartar and baking soda have not expired. Overmixed dough is another reason snickerdoodles come out flat.

If you have a silicone baking mat, use that. The silicone gives the cookies something to hold onto and spreads less compared to parchment paper.

Why is it called a snickerdoodle?

There really isn’t an agreement, but the whimsical name could be derived from the German word “schneckennudel,” which refers to a type of snail-shaped pastry. The name may also stem from a blend of the words snicker and doodle.

What’s the difference between a snickerdoodle and a sugar cookie?

Classic sugar cookies are rolled in just white sugar (or no sugar), while snickerdoodles are coated in cinnamon sugar.

Sugar cookies tend to be crunchier and do not have the crinkly edges that snickerdoodles have. Plus, sugar cookies are made with baking powder, not cream of tartar.

Storage instructions

How to store chocolate chip snickerdoodles

To store, fully cool the cookies before putting them into an airtight container or ziplock bag. You can keep the snickerdoodles at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Freeze chocolate chip snickerdoodle cookies

You can also freeze snickerdoodles for up to 3 months. Again, allow the cookies to cool completely before transferring them to a freezer-friendly container or freezer bag. Let thaw on the counter before enjoying.

Freeze the cookie dough

To freeze the unbaked cookies, roll the balls out and chill in the fridge or freezer until solid. Then place them in a sealable freezer container and freeze until ready to use. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.

Once you’re ready to bake, thaw the dough balls for about 10 minutes while eth oven heats up. Roll in cinnamon sugar and bake. You may have to add 1 to 2 minutes to the bake time.
