DIY blue clay mask

In this DIY face mask post, you’ll learn how to make 6 blue clay mask recipes that are perfect for hydrated and glowing skin in winter. This comprehensive guide shares all of the details on what blue clay is, how to use blue clay in skincare, and the best blue face mask DIYs.

I found out about French blue clay when my cousins from France, Nichola and Phillipe, gave me a bag of argile bleue, which is the French word for blue kaolin clay, from a company called Les Argiles du Soleil. I was so intrigued by the stunning blue colour that I immediately thought about DIY blue face mask recipes.

So, let’s learn more about this cosmetic clay and how to make a DIY blue clay face mask.

French blue clay

Now let’s talk about what French blue clay is, possible skincare benefits of blue clay, how to make your own blue clay and uses in homemade beauty recipes.

What is French blue clay?

Reading the ingredient label of the clay my cousins gave me, it seems that French blue clay is mix of white Kaolin clay and ultramarine oxide, which is a mineral-derived blue pigment.  Other types of blue clay exist, such as Cambrian blue clay, which is an ingredient in blue clay mask or blue clay soap. But those clays don’t have the beautiful colour of blue kaolin clay.

What is French blue clay? The skincare benefits of French blue clay are similar to those of other kaolinite clays. Blue clay is said to be one of the mildest clays, suitable for sensitive skin types, acne-prone skin, and inflamed skin. This clay has detoxifying properties that draw out impurities and toxins from the skin, such as excess oil, sebum and dirt, thereby reducing breakouts. #blueclay #claymask #blueclaymask #clay | countryhillcottage.com

What are the skincare benefits of French blue clay?

The skincare benefits of blue clay are similar to those of other kaolinite clays. Blue clay is said to:

  • be one of the mildest clays, suitable for sensitive skin types, acne-prone skin, and inflamed skin
  • have detoxifying properties that draw out impurities and toxins from the skin, such as excess oil, sebum and dirt, thereby reducing breakouts
  • soothe irritated skin
  • be slightly abrasive, which is perfect to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells for a smoother, fresher complexion
  • have a skin-tightening effect and to reduce the appearance of pores
  • tone the skin and stimulate circulation

Where to buy French blue clay

When I developed the blue face mask recipes, I didn’t realise that French blue clay can be difficult to source outside of Europe and that the product isn’t easily available in North America. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the skincare benefits of blue clay masks.

I found two eBay shops from Portugal that sell and ship French blue clay worldwide but the shipping time may be long depending on your location: French blue clay or French blue clay. If you know other sources for purchasing blue clay, drop a comment.

You can also prepare these hydrating face mask recipes with Kaolin clay. Aside from the blue colour, the homemade face mask will be the same.

How to make DIY blue clay

Another method is to make DIY blue clay.  As I mentioned, French blue clay is Kaolin clay coloured with ultramarine pigment. So, I tested three ways to make blue clay with ultramarine oxide, blue mica, and blue spirulina algae powder.

  • Colouring white kaolin clay with ultramarine oxide mineral powder gives you French blue clay. Ultramarine oxide, which is considered perfectly safe for skincare in Europe but shouldn’t be used on the lips according to the FDA, can be naturally sourced or synthetically manufactured.
  • While the blue clay coloured with mica looks pretty, there is no skincare benefit to adding mica to a face mask.
  • Mixing white cosmetic clay and blue spirulina algae powder not only gives our DIY face mask a mesmerising blue colour, but using a spirulina face mask can beneficial for the skin. So, if DIYing, I’d recommend spirulina powder to make blue clay. More on this later!

How do you use blue clay?

Aside from blue face mask recipes, blue clay can be used in different homemade natural beauty products. The cleansing properties of clay are useful in homemade cleansers and scrubs. French blue clay, like other clays, can also be used to stabilise body butters and lotions. An added bonus is that clay will make the texture silky and less greasy, like this DIY cleansing balm. And the gorgeous ice-blue clay is also a beautiful natural colourant for DIY beauty products, soap recipes and DIY bath bombs.

Blue clay mask recipes – Hydrating DIY face masks for dry skin

Now to the part you have been waiting for: 6 homemade blue clay mask recipes! Since winter is upon us, we don’t want to dry out the skin more but instead make a face mask for dry skin. Therefore, I used mainly moisturising materials for these homemade facial mask recipes.

To use the French blue clay mask, it needs to be mixed with a liquid. To make the mask purifying and moisturizing, I mixed the dry ingredients with aloe vera gel and fractionated coconut oil. This oil is moisturising and non-comedogenic, meaning it doesn’t clog pores or cause breakouts.

I’m going to show you how to make DIY blue clay mask recipes, and I bet you’ll be hooked once you see how easy cleansing face mask DIYs are.

Aloe vera is known for its soothing and hydrating effects. Whether you have dry, itchy skin or very oily skin, aloe vera gel can help. The plant’s soothing qualities are beneficial to treats sunburns, dry skin, small cuts, cold sores, eczema, and inflammatory acne.

Hydrating blue clay mask recipe

Here’s the ingredient list for this glacial blue aloe vera face mask recipe:

Combine the ingredients in a small non-metallic mixing bowl. Since the blue clay is very absorbent, you may have to add more liquid to achieve a spreadable consistency. If oil separates from the other ingredients, simply give the mask a quick stir before applying.

Apply the hydrating blue clay mask all over your face and smooth into a thin layer using your fingertips. Wait for 8 to 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Follow up with a face serum, oil or moisturiser.

The shelf life of this DIY hydrating face mask is 7 days in the refrigerator. To make the blue clay face mask last longer, mix in 5 drops Optiphen Plus. Optiphen Plus is a paraben-free preservative used to minimise the risk of bacteria or mould growth in homemade natural beauty products and cosmetics.

Blue clay honey face mask for glowing skin – Sky blue exfoliating clay mask

Packed with nutrients, antioxidants and flavonoids, honey is a great ingredient for a honey clay mask. But what does honey do to your face? Raw honey has several skincare benefits. For one, honey is a gentle exfoliator, pore cleanser and its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help  to clear out clogged pores and soothe acne.

The humectant and emollient qualities in this DIY honey face mask with blue clay can also help to hydrate and to reduce dryness by replenishing moisture in the skin. The nutrients in honey are also said to reduce the signs of skin ageing and prevent free-radical damage.

How do you get the Kaolin Clay and the Ultramarine Oxide? It doesn't seem to mix together well for me :/ Thanks

Hi Jamie. I'm sorry that you have an issue. The kaolin clay and ultramarine oxide mineral are both powders, and I simply fill them in a small bowl and mix them with a small whisk or spoon. I'm not sure why the wouldn't mix. Can you explain more?
