What is sweet potato fries dipping sauce?

Sweet potato dipping sauce is a creamy condiment that you can enjoy with fries of any kind, hamburgers, wraps, and sandwiches.

My recipe is inspired by classic fry sauce. This dipping sauce originated in the restaurant chain Arctic Circle in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the 1950s.

Similar to the original recipe, it’s made with mayonnaise, ketchup, and spices to create an amazing dipping sauce that is flavorful and delicious.

Ingredients

You probably have all sweet potato fry dip ingredients waiting in your pantry. And once you start dipping, you won’t be able to stop. Please see the recipe card below for exact quantities.

  • Mayonnaise is the foundation of the sauce. Choose your favorite kind of mayonnaise, whether it’s Hellmann’s, Dukes, low fat, or whatever.
  • Ketchup provides sweetness and creates the soft, red color. Again, choose your favorite brand.
  • Pickle juice may seem weird, but it adds a dash of tanginess to the sauce. You can use any pickle juice you like and have available. The brine from bread and butter pickles, sweet pickles, dill pickles, and garlic pickles will work.
  • Worcestershire sauce adds loads of savory flavor to the sauce. If you don’t care for it, substitute a BBQ sauce, mustard, or even horseradish.
  • Paprika adds a bit of heat and color to the sweet potato fry sauce.

Tips

  • Use good-quality ingredients: The ingredients you use can make a big difference in how the sauce tastes. You want to pick the best products you can find. I recommend mayonnaise from Kirkland (Costco) or Hellmann’s, Heinz ketchup, and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce. Any brand of paprika will work, but make sure it’s fresh and not stale.
  • Let the fry sauce rest: If you taste the sweet potato fry sauce right away, it won’t taste as flavorful, and you might be tempted to add more seasonings. So please give the ingredients some time to develop and become more flavorful. I know it’s hard to wait, but it’s so worth it!
  • Adjust the amounts: You can easily double or triple the recipe if you need more servings. It’s also possible to half the recipe if you want less servings.

Variations & substitutions

Want to create your own custom sweet potato fry dip? Mix and swap ingredients to create endless variations of this sauce for your fries and burgers. Here are a few ideas you can experiment with:

  • Mayonnaise alternatives: I find the thick, rich texture of real mayonnaise works best, but you can swap in Miracle Whip or vegan mayo. And for a fry sauce without mayo, use Greek yogurt instead.
  • Change the ratio of mayo and ketchup according to your preferences.
  • Add spices: Salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper make great additions to this recipe sweet potato fries dipping sauce. Start with a sprinkle and continue adding more until you achieve your desired flavor.
  • Turn up the heat: Prepare the sauce as hot and spicy as you’d like. Buffalo sauce, hot sauce, tabasco sauce, red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and chili powder are great ways to crank up the heat.
  • Mustard: Add 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard or Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
  • Honey: Stir 1 to 2 tablespoons clear honey into the sauce to emphasize the sweetness.
  • Other juices: Not a fan of pickle juice? Substitute lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or horseradish to give the sauce that kick of tanginess.
  • Gluten-free: For a gluten-free sweet potato fry sauce, ensure all ingredients are certified gluten-free, especially the Worcestershire sauce.

How to store sweet potato fry dipping sauce

Store the dip in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator.

When you’re ready to serve, simply give the sauce a good stir and enjoy cold!

How long does sweet potato fries dip last?

The dipping sauce will last for a week in the fridge.

You can make the recipe ahead of time, but again, make sure to eat it within 5 to 7 days.

The sauce won’t keep as long if it is left out at room temperature for extended periods of time or if you have double-dippers in the family.

In that case, just take out the amount you need and keep the rest in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze sweet potato fry dip?

I do not recommend freezing this sweet potato fry dip. It will separate when frozen and thawed, and have water condensation.
