Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise – This is the foundation of the sauce. Choose your favorite kind of mayonnaise, whether it’s Hellmann’s, Dukes, low fat, or whatever.
- 1/2 cup ketchup – provides sweetness and creates the soft, red color. Again, choose your favorite brand.
- 1 tablespoon pickle juice – adds a dash of tanginess to the sauce. You can use any pickle juice you like and have available. The brine from bread and butter pickles, sweet pickles, dill pickles, and garlic pickles will work.
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce – adds loads of savory flavor to the sauce. If you don’t care for it, substitute a BBQ sauce, mustard, or even horseradish.
- 1 teaspoon paprika – adds a bit of heat and color to the sauce.
Variations & substitutions
- Mayonnaise alternatives: I find the thick, rich texture of real mayonnaise works best, but you can swap in Miracle Whip or vegan mayo. And for a version without mayo, use Greek yogurt instead.
- Change the ratio of mayo and ketchup according to your preferences.
- Add spices: Salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper make great additions to this recipe. Start with a sprinkle and continue adding more until you achieve your desired flavor.
- Turn up the heat: Prepare the sauce as hot and spicy as you’d like. Buffalo sauce, hot sauce, tabasco sauce, red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and chili powder are great ways to crank up the heat.
- Mustard: Add 1 teaspoon of yellow mustard or Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
- Honey: Stir 1 to 2 tablespoons clear honey into the sauce to emphasize the sweetness.
- Other juices: Not a fan of pickle juice? Substitute lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, or horseradish to give that kick of tanginess.
- Gluten-free: For a gluten-free sauce, ensure all ingredients are certified gluten-free, especially the Worcestershire sauce.
Instructions
1. Add ingredients
Add the mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, and paprika to a medium mixing bowl.
2. Mix until smooth
Using a spoon or whisk, mix the ingredients until everything is well combined and smooth.
3. Serve
Serve with sweet potato fries, onion rings, fried shrimp, burgers, or chicken. Enjoy!
Tips
- Use good-quality ingredients: The ingredients you use can make a big difference in how the sauce tastes. You want to pick the best products you can find. I recommend mayonnaise from Kirkland (Costco) or Hellmann’s, Heinz ketchup, and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce. Any brand of paprika will work, but make sure it’s fresh and not stale.
- Let the fry sauce rest: If you taste the sweet potato fry sauce right away, it won’t taste as flavorful, and you might be tempted to add more seasonings. So please give the ingredients some time to develop and become more flavorful. I know it’s hard to wait, but it’s so worth it!
- Adjust the amounts: You can easily double or triple the recipe if you need more servings. It’s also possible to half the recipe if you want less servings.
Serving suggestions
The dipping sauce is good on everything fried and crispy – from sweet potato fries to French fries to onion rings and avocado fries.
We love it with zucchini chips, tostones, and breaded zucchini sticks.
Creating a French fry board is so much fun! Offer a different type of French fries and a variety of dipping sauces on a large platter.
Ketchup, honey mustard, and Velveeta cheese sauce are some of my favorite sauces to enjoy with fries.
The dip is also perfect for dipping chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, and mozzarella sticks. Or try adding it to burgers, sandwiches, grilled cheese, subs, or wraps.
Storage tips
How to store the dip
Store the dip in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator.
When you’re ready to serve, simply give the sauce a good stir and enjoy cold!
How long does it last?
The dipping sauce will last for a week in the fridge.
You can make the recipe ahead of time, but again, make sure to eat it within 5 to 7 days.
The sauce won’t keep as long if it is left out at room temperature for extended periods of time or if you have double-dippers in the family. In that case, just take out the amount you need and keep the rest in the refrigerator.
Can you freeze it?
I do not recommend freezing the dip. It will separate when frozen and thawed, and have water condensation.
