Ingredients
Just 3 ingredients go into this cherry pie filling dump cake. Reference the recipe card below for exact measurements.
- Cherry pie filling is the star ingredient. You need two 21 oz cans; any brand will work. The recipe is pretty forgiving in case you can’t find 21 oz cans. Simply use ones that contain slightly less or more.
- Cake mix: I prefer yellow cake mix, but white cake mix or lemon cake mix would work beautifully, too.
- Melted butter combines with the cake mix to create a crisp, golden top. Both salt and unsalted butter are fine.
How to make cherry pie filling dump cake
This pie filling dump cake comes together in a few simple steps. And the best part of making this recipe? You mix and bake the cherry pie filling cake all in the same pan.
1. Add fruit layer
- Pour the cherry pie filling into a greased baking dish and spread it out into an even layer.
2. Add the cake mix
- Sprinkle the cake mix on top over the cherry pie filling.
3. Melt the butter
- Melt the and drizzle the melted butter over the cake mix. Soak as much of the cake mix with melted butter as possible to ensure a crisp, golden top.
4. Bake dump cake
- Bake the cake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the golden brown on top and the filling is bubbly.
- Remove the dump cake from the oven and let sit for 15 minutes to cool. Enjoy!
Variations
Try a different cake mix topping. We love the combination of cherry and yellow cake, but white or chocolate cake mix can be used instead.
Swap out the fruit: Replace the pie filling with any other fruit you like. It’s a great base recipe to go off.
Add almond extract: 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract enhances the cherry flavor.
Make it lemony: Stir lemon zest for a fresh, lemony flavor.
Add some nuts: A handful of chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds can add a lovely crunch to the filling.
Tropical twist: Stir crushed pineapples into the filling for a summery, tropical flavor.
Holiday version: Add a dash of ground cinnamon to the cherry pie filling to give the cake a festive touch.
Serving suggestions
Cherry dump cake tastes best served warm or at room temperature.
Either way, you want to let your cherry pie cake rest for at least 15 minutes out of the oven before serving. Otherwise, the filling will be scalding hot!
To me, cherry dump cake is only complete with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! It’s so satisfying when the ice cream gets melty on warm cake.
Whipped cream is another delicious option.
You can even sprinkle white chocolate chips over the top of the warm dump cake. The chocolate chips will get all melty and gooey.
Storage instructions
- Store: Keep the dump cake can in the fridge for up to 5 days. Cover the baking dish with foil or transfer leftovers to an airtight container.
- Reheat: Reheat single servings in the microwave in 30-second bursts until warm.
