The best Chick Fil A chocolate chip cookies

Chick Fil A chocolate chip cookies aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the Chick Fil A menu. But honestly, they’re among the most delicious treats you can get from the iconic restaurant chain.

Since I can never say no to creating a good copycat recipe, I knew I had to try recreating the cookies from Chick Fil A. And I think they turned out amazing!

I mean, these ooey-gooey chocolate chunk cookies are wonderfully soft and chewy with slightly crisp edges. And they have both semi-sweet and milk chocolate plus wholesome oats in every single bite.

And in addition to being incredibly delicious, these cookies are easy to prepare too. You essentially just mix the wet and the dry ingredients, then portion your cookies and happily bake away. So simple!

Ingredients

Copycat Chick Fil A chocolate chip cookies come together with much of the same ingredients as any chocolate chip cookie recipe. Please scroll down to the recipe card below for exact quantities.

  • Butter + shortening: Unlike the actual Chick Fil A cookie (which only has shortening), I like combining shortening and butter. Shortening provides moisture, while butter gives the cookies a wonderful buttery flavor.
  • Sugar: You need both light brown and granulated sugar for sweetness and texture. Out of brown sugar? Try these chocolate chip cookies without brown sugar – they are a reader favorite!
  • Egg: Just one egg helps bind the dough together and adds richness.
  • Vanilla extract adds warmth and depth of flavor.
  • Flour: I’m using regular all-purpose flour since I always stock it in my pantry, but you could use bleached wheat flour or enriched flour since that’s what Chick Fil A uses. However, I don’t think it makes a big difference in the texture or flavor of the cookies.
  • Rolled Oats (aka old-fashioned oats) are larger and have more “chew” than quick oats. In a pinch, you could sub those in if needed, though.
  • Baking soda ensures the cookies spread while keeping them chewy.
  • Salt: You’ll need just a pinch to balance the sweetness.
  • Chocolate chunks: You need a mix of milk and semi-sweet chocolate chips for the perfect Chick Fil A replica. If you wanted to switch things up, you could use white or dark chocolate chips instead.

Baker’s tips

As far as chocolate chip cookies go, this  Chick Fila chocolate chunk cookie recipe is one of my favorites to make at home. To ensure they will be a big hit with your family and friends, follow these easy tips and tricks!

  • Measure the flour correctly: Adding too much flour to the recipe will make the cookies dry and crumbly. The best and easiest way to measure flour is using a digital kitchen scale. If you don’t have one, fluff the flour with a spoon, sprinkle it into your measuring cup, and use a knife to level the excess off.
  • Use room temperature ingredients: For the best results, your cold ingredients (like the butter, shortening, and egg) should be at room temperature so they can easily be whipped and creamed.
  • Chill the cookie dough: Chilling the dough is optional but will create cookies that spread out less and improve the flavor.
  • Avoid overbaking: For perfectly soft and chewy cookies, it’s important to remove them from the oven once the edges are set, but the center is still slightly underbaked. The cookies will continue to set as they cool. Be careful not to overbake the cookies as they will become dry.
  • Scoot the cookies: To make cookies perfectly round and uniform in size, use a large round cookie cutter to swirl around the outside of the cookies. This helps to “scoot” and smooth out the edges of the cookies. You want to do this while the cookies are still warm from the oven.

Variations

  • Nuts: Toasted walnuts or pecans make an excellent addition to this cookie. Try adding in 1/2 to 1 cup of chopped nuts.
  • Chopped chocolate: Try using roughly chopped chocolate for a more rustic look with bigger pools of melty chocolate.
  • Peanut butter chips: Sometimes, I like to substitute the milk chocolate with 1/2 cup peanut butter chips.
  • Drizzle: For extra flavor, drizzle melted chocolate over the top of the cooled, baked cookies.

Storage instructions

How to store Chick Fil A cookies

My recipe for Chick Fil A cookies makes about 20 to 24 cookies, depending on big you make them. They’re so good warm out of the oven that I wouldn’t expect to have many leftovers!

Still, if you do have some leftovers, they store really well. Just place the cooled cookies into an airtight container. They will last on the counter for about a week, but they’ll be freshest the first 3 days after baking.

Freeze copycat Chick Fil A cookies

Alternatively, freeze the cookies in an airtight container – or freezer-safe bag – for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to eat them, either let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight or pop a single cookie in the microwave for 15 seconds (or until warm).

Store the cookie dough

You can also store the unbaked cookie dough to bake later. Place the dough into a ziplock bag and squeeze out as much air as you can. It will stay fresh in the fridge for up to a week or 2 months in the freezer.

When ready to bake, scoop up the dough, pop onto a cookie sheet, and bake. Frozen dough needs to warm up a bit, so place it in the fridge for a few hours before scooping.
