Refreshing 4th of July mint cooler
Nothing is more refreshing than this spritzy patriotic mint cooler on a hot day. It’s one of my go-to summer drinks and a family favorite for Independence Day parties.
The recipe is super quick and easy to prepare, which is always a plus when you’re entraining. Since it’s non-alcoholic, the whole family can enjoy this drink.

Create berry ice cubes
Red and blue berry ice cubes add patriotic flair to July 4 drinks and keep them nice and cold, even if it’s just sparkling water or lemonade. And they are super easy to make too!
Supplies
- red + blue berries – Use ripe, fresh berries. I opted for raspberries and blueberries. You can also choose other red berries (e.g., sliced strawberries, pitted cherries, cranberries) and blue berries (like grapes or blackberries). For 24 to 30 ice cubes, you need about 1 cup of raspberries and 1/2 cup of blueberries.
- water – Some suggest distilled water for clear ice cubes, but regular tap water or filtered water is just fine.
- ice cube tray – You can use all kinds of shapes and sizes. I prefer smaller ice cube trays because small ice cubes are easier to layer in a glass.
1. Add berries
Place 2 to 4 berries into each cavity of your ice cube tray.
2. Cover with water
Pour water over the berries, filling the mold all the way up. I like to put my ice trays on a small baking sheet so they are easier to transport.
3. Freeze
Put the ice trays in the freezer and freeze for 12 to 24 hours.
4. Unmold
Once the water is frozen through, release the ice cubes from the mold. Gently bend the ice tray until the cubes pop out. Keep the ice cubes in a freezer bag or container in the freezer until ready to use.
Make the mint cooler
Now that you have berry ice cubes, let’s put them to good use! This refreshing mint cooler is the perfect sip to refresh on hot summer days.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons mint syrup – Mint syrup gives this drink a wonderfully refreshing taste. You can use your favorite homemade mint syrup or store-bought mint syrup.
- 1 cup club soda – Top up the drink with your favorite fizzy beverage, such as sparkling water, ginger ale, or a clear lemon-lime soda like 7Up or Sprite.
- berry ice cubes
- edible flowers (optional) – add a wow factor to the drink. I used white daisies and blue cornflowers for a patriotic look.
1. Add syrup
Add 2 tablespoons of mint syrup to a tall glass or highball glass. You can use 3 tablespoons of syrup if you enjoy your drink on the sweeter side.
2. Layer in ice cubes
Fill the glass with the berry ice cubes all the way to the top. You can mix the colors or create separate layers (like you see in the photos).
3. Top up with club soda
Pour in the club soda to the top of the glass. Stir to combine.
4. Garnish
For an elegant presentation, decorate your mint cooler with edible flowers. Serve the drink right away. Sip and enjoy!
Tips
- Number of servings: My recipe makes 1 drink. Scale up the ingredient amounts if you need more servings.
- Chill the glass and soda: Refrigerate your serving glass and soda before you assemble the mint cooler. It really helps to keep the drink cold for longer.
- Big batch: To make a pitcher or punch bowl of 8 servings, use 16 to 20 tablespoons of mint syrup, add lots of ice cubes, and top with club soda.
Variations
- Swap the syrup: Feel free to prepare the recipe with your favorite clear syrup, such as lemon syrup, lime syrup, or coconut syrup for a more tropical flavor.
- Make it fruity: Stir a few splashes of fruit juice into the drink. Some great options include pineapple juice, strawberry juice, cranberry juice, or guava nectar.
- Add booze: For a boozy, adults-only version, add a shot of white rum, gin, tequila, or Angostura bitters.
