Amazing English muffin garlic bread
Garlic bread English muffins are one of our favorite garlic breads because of the fantastic flavor and texture. The muffins have a crunchy crust on the outside but remain soft on the inside, and taste amazing because they are full of cheese and garlic!
The recipe is a great way to use up leftover English muffins and turn them into something absolutely delicious. Plus, it’s super quick to put together, and you can whip this up in no time.
Garlic bread with English muffins compliments all sorts of dinner meals, and we especially love it with homemade pasta and lasagna. While there are many garlic bread recipes out there, you don’t want to miss this one!
Ingredients
English muffin garlic bread is incredibly easy! The recipe only takes 6 ingredients, and you’ll be all set and ready to make it. Refer to the recipe card at the end of the post for exact measurements.
- English muffins: I really recommend plain English muffins for this. They have deep nooks and crannies where the garlic butter can sink into and load every bite with a delicious, buttery garlic aroma.
- Garlic: You need 3 freshly minced cloves. Feel free to use more or less according to your personal preferences.
- Butter: I prefer salted butter because it adds great flavor. Take it out early to soften to room temperature, and it will be easier to mix and spread.
- Mozzarella: Freshly grated mozzarella melts the best and tastes so good.
- Cheddar: I used medium white cheddar cheese, but sharp or orange cheddar is great too.
- Italian seasoning adds complexity and depth of flavor. Alternatively, use dried or fresh parsley.
How to make English muffin garlic bread
English muffin garlic bread is easy and ready to eat in less than 20 minutes. It’s such delicious garlic bread that you want to keep the recipe on hand – I have a feeling you’ll be making this all the time!
Step 1: Prepare for baking
- Adjust a baking rack in the center of your oven and preheat to 400°F / 200°C / gas mark 6.
- Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment (baking) paper.
Step 2: Cut the English muffins
- Using a serrated knife, slice your English muffins lengthwise and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 3: Make butter garlic spread
- To a medium bowl, add the softened butter, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, and shredded cheese. Mix the ingredients with a spoon or spatula until everything is well combined.
Step 4: Spread English muffins
- Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on the cut side of your English muffins. If desired, sprinkle with a little extra cheese.
Step 5: Bake
- Bake the English muffin bread in the preheated oven for 8 to 12 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. The edges of the English muffins should look crisp and golden brown.
Step 6: Serve
- Serve your garlic bread warm as a side with pasta, salad, or a bowl of soup. Enjoy!
Soft vs. crisp English muffin garlic bread
This garlic bread recipe can be roasted soft or crispy. For softer buns that aren’t as crispy on the outside, cover your English muffins loosely with foil before baking. Just make sure the butter garlic spread is fully melted on the inside.
Tips for success
Here are 3 tips to ensure you’re getting the most delicious English muffin garlic bread out of every batch. With their amazing garlic flavor and short cook time, this English muffins recipe is a treat to return to again!
- If you notice the English muffins baking too quickly, cover the buns with a tent of aluminum foil to prevent them from burning.
- Broil: Optionally, broil the garlic bread English muffins for 1 to 2 minutes at the end to create extra crispy tops.
- Serve the garlic English muffins warm, but patiently wait a few minutes before digging in. Fresh from the oven, the cheese is scolding hot, and needs to cool for a moment.
Variations
I kept the flavorings for this English muffin garlic bread quite simple, going for cheesy garlic bread, but you can customize the flavors and make this garlic bread recipe your own. Here are a couple of ideas:
- Caprese garlic bread: For a Caprese version, top your garlic bread with mozzarella, tomato slices, and fresh basil.
- Make it spicy: Swap out the mozzarella for pepper jack cheese and top your garlic bread with sliced jalapenos.
- Antipasto spreads Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons pesto, olive tapenade, or ajvar into the butter mixture.
- Gourmet garlic bread: Prepare the spread with truffle butter, gruyere cheese, and roasted mushrooms.
- Lemon herb garlic bread: Mix 2 tablespoons fresh herbs and 1 tablespoon lemon juice into the spread and replace the cheddar with feta cheese.
Serving suggestions
Garlic bread goes well with so many different foods, especially Italian entrees. I mean, it doesn’t get much better than garlic bread being dunked into a delicious pasta sauce on your plate!
It’s great to dip in soups and stews and tastes yummy served alongside Italian classics like spaghetti Bolognese, baked ziti, and lasagna.
You can also accompany it by a fresh salad to make it a complete meal. Or serve it as party food (think game day!) or as a delicious appetizer.
We love it with alfredo meatballs, salmon pasta, this gnocchi bake, simple mac and cheese, Caprese salad, and pumpkin soup.
FAQ
Can I make this with garlic powder?
Yes, feel free to substitute garlic powder for fresh garlic cloves if that is what you have. 1 clove of fresh garlic equals 1/4 tsp garlic powder, meaning you’ll need 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of garlic powder for this recipe.
What English muffins are best?
In this recipe, I used regular English muffins. Plain English muffins are ideal for this recipe because they are sturdy and taste neutral, making them the perfect vessel for the garlicky, cheesy goodness on top.
Of course, you can use other types of English muffins, such as multigrain, whole wheat, or honey wheat. I don’t recommend blueberry, cranberry, raisin, or spiced English muffins, as these flavors clash with the garlic aroma.
Though I prefer classic English muffins (because they are softer), you could also use sourdough English muffins if you enjoy chewy garlic bread.
Can I make this with hamburger buns or other bread?
Absolutely! The cheese garlic spread is enough to cover 4 to 6 hamburger buns or 1 loaf French bread. I also have a dedicated hamburger bun garlic bread recipe.
Can I make garlic bread muffins in the Air Fryer?
Sure, Air Fryer English muffin garlic bread is so good! Here are the easy steps:
- Make the garlic spread and smear the mixture onto the English muffins.
- Place the English muffins into your air fryer in a single layer.
- Air fry at 350°F for 4 to 6 minutes.
Storage instructions
How to store English muffin garlic bread
If you make enough of this English muffin garlic bread, you can have some for tomorrow’s dinner as well! Here are my tips on how you can easily store and reheat it when you are ready.
- Room Temperature: Cheesy English muffins are best stored in an airtight container in the refrigeratorfor 2 to 3 days. You can also keep them on the counter for 1 day.
- Reheat: Wrap each piece of garlic bread in foil and place it in your oven at 350°F / 180°C / gas mark 4. Then, warm it for 5 to 8 minutes or until heated through. Microwaving can make the bread soggy, so I don’t recommend it.
Can I make English muffin garlic bread ahead of time?
Yes! If you’re short on time, prepare the garlic cheese mixture the day before, cover the bowl tightly, and leave it in the fridge until you’re ready to bake your cheesy garlic bread English muffins.
