Reasons to love Nutella bread
- Amazing taste + texture: Every bite of this bread is loaded with chocolate and hazelnut flavor. The bread has a soft texture and tender crumb, blanketed under a thick layer of Nutella.
- Easy ingredients: You only need 3 ingredients, and I’m willing to bet that you have the items to make Nutella bread already in your kitchen.
- One bowl: I love recipes where I don’t have to clean loads of dishes. The batter is whipped up in one bowl and you don’t need a mixer or any special tools.
- No eggs, butter, oil, or sugar. I based this Nutella bread recipe on my 3-ingredient peanut butter bread. It was inspired by a recipe from the Great Depression-era when things like eggs and butter were harder to find.
Ingredients
The ingredients are pantry staples, and you probably have them in your kitchen and pantry already. Check out the recipe card at the end of the post for exact measurements.
- Nutella infuses the bread with a delicious chocolate hazelnut flavor. If possible, use a fresh jar of Nutella or one that has been only recently opened. You want your spread to be still very creamy. If working with an older jar that has gotten a little dry, pop the Nutella in a microwave-safe bowl and heat it for 15 to 20 seconds to soften it.
- Milk helps to bind the batter. You can use any type of milk, but I find whole milk or 2% works best for this quick bread recipe. To make dairy-free Nutella bread, use your favorite non-dairy milk like almond, oat, or soy milk.
- Self-rising flour gives the bread structure and rise. It’s a mix of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. I’ll explain how to make your own later.
Nutella frosting
To frost or not to frost, that is the question. Is frosting necessary? No, because there’s already plenty of Nutella flavor in each bite of this Nutella bread. Do I love the extra frosting anyway? Absolutely! And if you love your breads on the sweeter side, I say go for it!
To frost, simply spread Nutella on top of your loaf bread and sprinkle with sliced hazelnuts. For extra flavor, toast the hazelnuts at 300°F / 150°C / gas mark 2 for 10 to 12 minutes.
How to make Nutella bread
Homemade Nutella bread is super easy and something anyone can make! It’s so simple but turns out so good that your family and friends won’t be able to resist a slice or two.
Step 1: Preheat oven
- Adjust a baking rack in the center position and preheat to 350°F / 180°C / gas mark 4.
Step 2: Prep loaf pan
- Grease a 9 in x 5 in / 23 cm x 12 cm loaf pan with butter or cooking spray.
- Line with a piece of parchment (baking) paper, creating an overhang.
Step 3: Combine Nutella and milk
- Put the room temperature Nutella into a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup milk and whisk until smooth and combined.
- Add another 1/2 cup milk and stir to fully incorporate.
- Now add the remaining milk and stir until smooth.
Step 4: Add flour
- Next, stir until the self-rising flour until just combined, and you no longer see streaks of flour. Be careful not to overmix.
Step 5. Bake
- Pour the bread batter into the prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center comes out clean with only a few crumbs attached but no liquid batter.
Step 6: Cool
- Cool the Nutella bread in the pan for 10 minutes.
- Then lift the loaf out of the pan and place it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 7: Glaze (optional)
- If desired, frost the cooled bread with Nutella and sprinkle with sliced hazelnuts.
Step 8: Serve
- Cut into slices and eat warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
Tips for the best Nutella bread
Are you hungry yet? If you’re ready to bake, go for it – but take a minute to check out these quick tips first to ensure your easy Nutella bread turns out perfect!
- Grease pan well: This bread is pretty moist, so be sure to grease your loaf pan well and line it with a parchment (baking) paper sling. You don’t want the bread get stuck or fall apart when you transfer it out of the pan.
- Don’t overmix: When adding the self-rising flour to the wet ingredients, stir until just combined. Over-mixing the batter can lead to dense bread.
- Check doneness: Use a wooden skewer or a toothpick to see if your Nutella loaf is finished. A clean toothpick poked into the center of the bread should come out clean when removed.
Variations & add-ins
You can change up a few things and customize this Nutella quick bread to your liking! Here are a few suggestions for you!
- Hazelnuts: For extra crunch, fold 2/3 cup chopped hazelnuts into the batter before baking.
- Chocolate chips: Add 3/4 cup regular or mini chocolate chips. White, milk, or semisweet chocolate will work.
- Cocoa powder: Stir 1/8 cup unsweetened cocoa powder into the batter. This will create a richer chocolate flavor and cut some of the sweetness.
- Sea salt: Sprinkle a little coarse sea salt on top of your bread. Sea salt flakes add a bit of crunchy texture and balance the sweetness of the Nutella.
Storage instructions
How to store Nutella bread
Nutella loaf bread will stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 to 4 days. You can also store it in the refrigerator, which should keep it well for up to a week.
Can you freeze Nutella bread?
Nutella quick bread freezes well too. I like it in individual slices, but sometimes I’ll freeze a whole loaf as well.
- Freeze whole loaf: Skip the Nutella frosting, wrap your bread in plastic wrap, and place it inside a freezer-friendly container. Enjoy within 3 months of freezing. Allow thawing in the fridge overnight or on the counter for a few hours.
- Freeze slices: Slice the loaf and arrange the pieces on a lined baking sheet. Freeze for about an hour, then place the slices into a zip-lock bag. When you want to enjoy a slice, let it thaw, or microwave a frozen slice until warm.

Self-rising flour
If you don't have self-rising flour, don't worry! You can easily make some yourself. I use self-rising flour because it adds to the simplicity and cuts back on the ingredients.
For this Nutella quick bread, you'll need 3 cups all-purpose flour + 3 tablespoons baking powder + 1/4 teaspoon salt.
