How to make peppermint white hot chocolate – Vegan hot chocolate recipe
Healthy vegan peppermint hot chocolate doesn’t just taste amazing; it’s super easy to make, too. Here are the steps for this easy Christmas hot chocolate recipe:
- Warm the milk and white chocolate/cocoa butter. Add the milk, coconut cream, and white chocolate chips/cocoa butter into a heavy saucepan and cook over medium heat until the chocolate chips/cocoa butter has melted. Light steaming is okay, but do not boil. Whisk constantly to avoid burning.
- Add sweetener. If using a sweetener (liquid stevia or maple/coconut sugar) add it now and stir until dissolved.
- Add peppermint and vanilla extract. Take off the heat and add the peppermint and vanilla extract. Taste and add more extract if necessary. If making Keto peppermint white chocolate, add the MCT oil now.
- Serve. Divide the peppermint white hot chocolate between 4 to 6 mugs. Top each serving with whipped coconut cream, marshmallows and sprinkle with crushed candy cane or sprinkles.

Tips for the best peppermint white vegan hot chocolate
In my family, we like rich and thick Christmas hot chocolate, so I made the vegan white hot chocolate recipe with almond milk and coconut cream. If you prefer a lighter low-fat peppermint hot chocolate, omit the coconut cream and use only dairy-free milk.
I used dairy-free white chocolate chips. Of course, a chopped vegan white chocolate bar can be used as well in this vegan holiday hot chocolate recipe. Since white chocolate is already sweetened, I didn’t add any additional sugar.
How much peppermint extract do I add to this vegan hot cocoa recipe? Well, that depends on your taste. 1/2 teaspoon gives a nice peppermint aroma but if you like your peppermint hot chocolate recipe extra minty you can go up 1 teaspoon or more.
I also added a small amount vanilla extract to the peppermint hot chocolate to balance the peppermint and white chocolate flavours. Again, this is optional and can be skipped in case you prefer minty hot chocolate.

Tips for the best keto peppermint hot chocolate
Can I drink white hot chocolate on keto? Yes, you can drink low carb keto white hot chocolate. But instead of using white chocolate chips, prepare the keto hot chocolate recipe with cocoa butter disks and liquid stevia.
Cocoa butter adds richness and a wonderful chocolate flavour to this sugar-free keto peppermint hot cocoa recipe. I recommend adding 10 to 15 drops stevia and then do a taste test before adding more sugar-free sweetener.
If adding MCT oil to your keto sugar-free hot chocolate recipe, it’s best to use a milk frother to blend the oil in with the other ingredients. Otherwise, whisk really well until the oil is incorporated in the low carb hot chocolate.
I don’t recommend bulletproofing this keto hot chocolate with butter. The sugar-free white hot chocolate already contains a lot of cocoa butter, which is an excellent keto fat source. Adding more fat would make this keto drink recipe overly oily.
If your keto peppermint white hot chocolate doesn’t have to be dairy-free, you can also top this low carb hot chocolate recipe with regular whipped cream. Or try these yummy sugar-free keto marshmallows.

Tips for the best paleo peppermint hot chocolate – Naturally sweetened hot cocoa
And what about paleo white hot chocolate? Just like the keto version, paleo peppermint hot chocolate is made with cocoa butter, a paleo-approved fat.
For sweetness, I suggest either maple sugar or coconut sugar to sweetened your paleo peppermint hot chocolate. The sugar adds a wonderful caramel note, and the drink will have a light caramel colour, too. Since stevia is a natural sweetener, you also can use it to sweeten your paleo white hot chocolate.
How much sugar you add depends on your personal taste. Some people like their paleo hot cocoa very sweet, others prefer just a hint of sweetness. So start with 2 to 3 tbsp, taste the paleo hot chocolate and added more unrefined sugar as needed.
How to decorate the mugs
Although completely optional, I thought it would look cute and festive to decorate the rim of the mugs. To do this simply melt a little more white chocolate/cocoa butter. Then dip the mugs first in melted white chocolate/cocoa butter and then in sprinkles or crushed candy cane.
If you live in a hot climate I don’t recommend this as the chocolate can melt easily.

Can you make white chocolate ahead of time?
Dairy-free peppermint white hot chocolate tastes best served right away, but the recipe can be reheated it if necessary.
Can you reheat this Christmas hot chocolate?
Yes, you can reheat peppermint hot chocolate. Just make sure that the vegan hot chocolate doesn’t boil. Either reheat on the stove top until warm, or in the microwave on a low setting.
How to store vegan hot chocolate
Leftover peppermint hot chocolate can be stored in an airtight bottle or container in the refrigerator. For reheating, see the tips above.

How do you get this to stay mixed? I whisked the entire time and never let it boil, yet the cocoa butter refused to stay emulsified. I have to stir before each sip.

Hi there. I'm sorry you have an issue. What type of milk are you using?
Try this: warm the milk and cocoa butter in a sauce pan until the butter is melted. Then transfer the mixture into a blender and blend on high.
Please let me know how it goes!
