What is lingonberry butter?
Lingonberry butter is a type of compound butter that is flavored with lingonberry preserves. It has a rich, fluffy texture and tastes wonderfully sweet and tart.
When I shared my copycat recipe for IHOP Swedish crepes, which are served with lingonberry butter, I decided to create a dedicated post for this fruity condiment.
We enjoy this butter spread so much on all kinds of breakfast treats and like to spread it on bagels, muffins, scones, and pancakes – the options are endless.

Reasons to love lingonberry butter
- Rich flavor + texture: Lingonberry butter tastes delicious, creamy, and flavorful.
- Quick: It takes all but 10 minutes to whip up.
- Easy prep: You’ll only need a mixing bowl, spatula, and mixer.
- Simple ingredients: The recipe requires only 2 ingredients.
Ingredients
Yes, you read right, there are only 2 ingredients in this simple compound butter recipe! Scroll to the recipe card at the end of the post for specific measurements.
- Butter: This fruit spread tastes best with some salt, and I recommend using salted butter. If you only have unsalted butter, add 1/8 teaspoon salt and then adjust to your liking. Be sure to set out the butter on the counter 30 to 60 minutes before to soften and warm up to room temperature.
- Lingonberry jam: The sweet, slightly sour taste of lingonberry jam contrasts beautifully with the creamy butter. You can find lingonberry jam in the preserve aisle at most supermarkets or order it on Amazon.
How to make lingonberry butter
Making homemade lingonberry butter is a cinch! You’ll love having it on pancakes and toast and all of your other favorite baked goods. Let’s whip some up!
- Combine. Place the softened butter and lingonberry jam into a large mixing bowl. Beat with an electric mixer until smooth and combined.
- Beat fluffy. Using a rubber spatula, scrape down the sides of the bowl. Then whip until light and fluffy, for about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Package. Spoon the lingonberry butter into a glass jar or airtight container.
Tips for success
- Room temperature ingredients: The key to making the best lingonberry butter is having both ingredients at room temperature. If one is colder than the other, they won’t combine properly.
- Adjust the jam: Feel free to adjust the amount of lingonberry jam to your liking. If the butter tastes too tart, mix in a little honey or powdered sugar.
- Double the recipe: You can easily double, triple, or quadruple the ingredient amounts if you need more. I like to whip up a larger batch and put it into decorative jars for gift giving.
- Bring to room temperature before serving: For the best flavor and a soft, creamy texture, always let your lingonberry butter warm to room temperature before enjoying it.
Serving ideas
You’ll want to slather this lingonberry butter on all the baked things, and honestly lick it right off the spreading knife. It’s traditionally served with Swedish crepes, pancakes, and waffles. We also love it on vanilla muffins, apple bread, peanut butter bread, dinner rolls, and biscuits.
