Natural Fall Air Freshener Spray Recipes with Essential Oils
Sometimes the simple DIY air fresheners are just as effective and good as the more complex ones like homemade scented candles, don’t you think? Take these all-natural fall air fresheners, for example. These DIY air freshener sprays are incredibly easy with just 3 ingredients plus a few essential oils, but still SO good and will make your house smell like fall.
I love these DIY room spray recipes to freshen up and deodorize my home naturally, without the synthetic fragrances and aerosols found in most commercial room sprays. The fall room spray recipes are easily adapted to any other seasons… meaning there’s never a bad time to use a natural air freshener spray!

What is room spray?
A room spray is a type of liquid air freshener that is spritzed into the air to freshen a room and to remove bad odors.
Room sprays are one of those air fresheners that sometimes gets a bad reputation, but I really believe that it’s all about materials and ingredients! Artificial fragrances, aerosol propellants, formaldehyde and other unpronounceable chemicals? No thanks! But all-natural? With essential oils? In a non-toxic room spray? YES PLEASE!
All you need to make homemade essential oils room spray is a distilled water, high proof alcohol, fall essential oil blends and the right mixing technique. Those small details will turn those who are anti-room spray into natural room spray lovers!

What materials do I need to make a natural fall air freshener spray?
First things first. Let’s talk about the fall air freshener ingredients. Here are the materials I used to make my air freshener DIY:
Distilled water
Distilled water is needed to make the room spray base recipe. I prefer to buy distilled water, but you can also use boiled water if you don’t have access to distilled water.
High-proof alcohol
To make this room spray recipe, we need any neutral-smelling high-proof alcohol that contains at least 40% alcohol (80 US proof). Vodka or Everclear (120, 151 and 190) very work well. The alcohol helps to combat bacteria and evaporates immediately after spraying.
The alcohol also acts as a solubiliser to keep the water and essential oils homogeneously mixed together. Using alcohol is one way how to make natural room fresheners last longer.
I don’t recommend making DIY room spray with rubbing alcohol or mixing essential oils with rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol usually has a strong and lingering chemical smell that doesn’t go away and can even cause headaches when too much is inhaled.
Baking soda
Using baking soda in a room spray is a bit different than other air freshener recipes. Baking soda neutralizes bad odors effectively. Bad odors tend to haven an acidic pH level, and baking soda lowers that pH level thus neutralizing the stinky smell. So this natural fall air freshener spray helps to eliminate bad smells in the home while also scenting naturally. The best of both worlds.
Essential oils
Essential oils provide fragrance and air-cleaning qualities to the DIY autumn room spray. The anti-bacterial and ant-viral properties of essential oils help to sanitise the air and reduce bacteria, viruses, and fungi. You can find a few fall air freshener scents below.
Spray bottles
As the exposure to light corrupts essential oils, it’s best to store the fall room spray in blue glass or amber spray bottles. The bottle size is up to you. Dark coloured glass bottles are available in different sizes, ranging from to 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz up to 16 oz. I bought these gorgeous amber bottles with gold caps and these shiny gold spray bottles on Amazon. The gold accents make them perfect for a fall room spray.

DIY fall essential oil room spray recipe
For a fall air freshener spray with essential oils, try spicy essential oils like cinnamon bark, clove bud and ginger. Woodsy scents such as pine, cedarwood, or balsam fir, are also excellent room spray scents and good for aromatherapy.
Use 30 to 45 drops essential oils for 1 4-oz spray bottle. I tried 3 different natural fall air freshener scents for the room spray formulation:
Pumpkin spice room spray – The quintessential fall fragrance
- 18 drops cinnamon bark
- 15 drops vanilla oleoresin
- 5 drops nutmeg
- 5 drops ginger
Golden Honey Flower – A floral autumn room spray
- 15 drops ylang ylang
- 15 drops sandalwood
- 7 drop cinnamon bark
- 7 drop ginger
Fall Forrest – A refreshing, woodsy air freshener spray
- 15 drops cedarwood
- 10 drops balsam fir

Here is the best method for how to make fall air freshener spray with essential oils and baking soda:
- Add the distilled water, alcohol, and baking soda to a small mixing bowl and stir until the baking soda has completely dissolved. The baking soda has to be mixed in well, or soda crystals can clog the sprayer.
- Next, drop the essential oils into a spray bottle.
- Now fill the rest of the spray bottle with the water-alcohol mixture. Tip: Use a small funnel to fill the bottles. This helps to avoid spilling and makes it easier to fill the bottles.
- Add the sprayer top and shake the bottle to combine everything.
