A beautiful 4th of July appetizer
If you’re looking for a patriotic appetizer to celebrate Memorial Day or Independence Day, you’ve come to the right place. Creamy goat cheese logs are covered in edible flowers and spices to create a delicious red, white, and blue treat.
The best part? The flower cheese logs look fancy pants but are super easy to make. You’ll only need a few simple ingredients and minimal prep.
It’s a versatile cheese recipe, and there are so many ways to serve it. You can enjoy the goat cheese logs on their own with some crackers. Or make them part of a festive charcuterie board.
Ingredients
- 3 goat cheese logs – Choose your favorite brand of goat cheese. I recommend 8 oz logs, but smaller 4 oz logs are fine as well.
- Red: I decorated my log with a mix of red pepper flakes and red flower petals. You can use petals from red roses, carnations, begonias, zinnias, or gerbera daisies. Just make sure your flowers haven’t been chemically treated.
- White: I chose unsweetened coconut flakes and daisies for the white cheese log. Since the cheese is already white, you could also leave it as is – but I think the flowers are just so darn pretty!
- Blue: There aren’t many blue spices and flowers, but cornflowers are both blue and edible. Cornflowers bloom from June to September. No worries if you can’t find fresh flowers. Dried cornflower petals are easy to find. As you can see in the photos, I used a mix of fresh and dried.
- Crackers for serving – We love Ritz crackers with this and will talk about more ideas later.
- Honey, for serving (optional) – Honey pairs beautifully with goat cheese for the perfect combination of sweet and savory.
How many servings does this make?
3 cheese logs are perfect for feeding a crowd of 8 to 10 people. If you want to serve only 3 to 4, use 1 cheese log and cover one end in red flowers, the other end in cornflowers, and leave the middle section white.
Instructions
Now for the fun part: Wrapping the cheese logs! Let’s do it color by color:
1. Red cheese log
Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap. Place the goat cheese on top and sprinkle generously with red pepper flakes.
Wrap the plastic wrap around the cheese log and press the red chili flakes into all sides of the log.
Unwrap and press a few red flower petals onto the log. You can brush the back of the petals with a bit of water so they stick better.
2. White cheese log
Use the handle of a small spoon or a knife and poke a few holes all over your goat cheese log.
Snip off the stems of the daisies and press the flower heads into the holes. Press coconut flakes in between the flowers.
3. Blue cheese log
Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap. Place the goat cheese on top and sprinkle generously with cornflower petals. Wrap the plastic wrap around the cheese log and press the petals into the cheese.
Unwrap and decorate the log with 3 to 4 whole cornflowers. Your patriotic flower goat cheese logs are ready!
Serving suggestions
There are so many ways to enjoy this patriotic cheese appetizer! Pair it with Ritz crackers, water crackers, nut thins, Triscuit crackers, crusty bread, crostini, or toast crisps. We love this goat cheese appetizer with a drizzle of honey!
To serve, plate your goat cheese logs on a pretty platter or serving tray and surround them with your favorite dippers. I like to hand butter knives so guests can cut off a slice and spread it on a cracker.
You can also make the cheese logs part of a 4th of July charcuterie board along with meats, nuts, fruits, and dips.
Storage
- Store: Place leftover goat cheese in an airtight container in the fridge and eat within 3 to 4 days.
- Can you freeze it? Yes, you can freeze leftovers tightly wrapped in plastic for up to 3 months. Just note that fresh flowers won’t look as pretty after thawing, and goat cheese gets crumblier the longer you keep it frozen.
