Red white and blue pizza
We make this sweet flag cookie pizza every year to celebrate the 4th of July. It’s so good with the fresh berries, fluffy cream, and sugar cookie crust. You’ll have to try it!
As a passionate pizza lover, I thought how fun it would be to create a savory 4th of July pizza, and this is the recipe I came up with.
It starts with a cheesy pizza base that I have decorated with red, white, and blue ingredients to represent the colors of the flag.
Cherry tomatoes and berries look gorgeous and taste so sweet and juicy. Together with the prosciutto and mozzarella, the fruity-cheesy-meaty combo really hits it off.
My whole family loves this patriotic pizza, and I hope yours will too!
Ingredients
- pizza crust – Make the pizza with either homemade or store-bought pizza dough. I bought a 13.8 oz can of Pillsbury pizza crust – it’s a quick and easy shortcut.
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce – Choose your favorite pizza sauce or make it from scratch. Marinara sauce or tomato pasta sauce will also work.
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese – Mozzarella is the best choice for this recipe because it melts so well in the oven.
- salt
- pepper
Toppings
The toppings are added to the pizza after baking because we want them to look fresh and nice.
- 8 slices prosciutto – The super fine slices of salty cured ham are a wonderful savory addition to pizza. Feel free to substitute ham if that’s what you prefer.
- 1 1/2 cups cherry tomatoes – You can also opt for grape tomatoes.
- 8 oz mozzarella pearls – Marinated and non-marinated mozzarella pearls are fine.
- 1 cup berries – I garnished my pizza slices with a mix of blueberries and blackberries. You could also use just blueberries.
- fresh basil (optional) – For a pretty presentation, garnish your pizza slices with a few fresh basil leaves.
Variations
- Vegetarian: Omit the prosciutto for a vegetarian 4th of July pizza.
- Cheese: Swap the shredded mozzarella for Swiss cheese, mild white cheddar, or Monterey jack. Mini burrata balls are an excellent alternative to mozzarella pearls.
- Sundried tomatoes are a tasty substitute for fresh cherry tomatoes.
- Alfredo sauce: Feel free to swap the pizza sauce for Alfredo sauce.
- Grilled pizza: If you (or your husband) are firing up the BBQ, you may want to try grilling your pizza for a delicious, grilled taste. Brush the dough with olive oil to prevent sticking, and then bake it directly on the grate. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes.
Instructions
1. Prep
Preheat your oven to 400°F / 200°C / gas mark 6 (or as specified on your dough).
2. Cut out stars
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Using a small star cookie cutter (I used a 2-inch / cutter), cut out star shapes from the pizza dough. Pizza dough is quite sticky, so wiggle the cutter around to properly separate the shape from the dough. You need about 8 stars.
3. Bake pizza crust stars
Transfer the dough stars onto a small baking tray and bake for 3 to 4 minutes, until just cooked through. Set aside to cool.
4. Cut pizza dough
With the help of a pizza roller or sharp knife, cut the remaining pizza dough into 6 to 8 squares or rectangles. Place the pizza onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
5. Assemble pizza
Using a large spoon, smooth a thin layer of pizza sauce over each dough square (approx. 1 to 2 tablespoons per piece). Sprinkle cheese over the crusts. Season with salt and pepper.
6. Bake pizza base
Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes (or as instructed on the packaging) until the cheese has melted and the crust is cooked through.
7. Decorate pizza
Remove the baked pizza from the oven and immediately decorate each slice with prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, berries, and a pizza crust star. If desired, garnish the pizza with fresh basil leaves and a few cracks of black pepper.
8. Serve
Arrange the pizza slices on a serving platter and serve right away. Enjoy!
Storage
- Room temperature: The 4th of July pizza can sit out at room temperature for 2 hours while serving.
- Refrigerate: Let leftovers cool, then cover tightly to keep moisture out, and store in the fridge. Consume within 2 to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F / 180°C / gas mark 4 oven until warmed through.
- Freeze: The toppings don’t freeze well, so I don’t recommend freezing the pizza.
