Ingredients
Cheesy garlic bread baguette uses simple ingredients, which is one of the things that makes it so amazing! The key is to use fresh garlic cloves and a good-quality baguette. Find specific measurements in the recipe card below.
- Baguette: The full-size baguette you can buy in the bakery section of your grocery store works best.
- Fresh garlic cloves: We’re going for a balanced garlic flavor and use 6 garlic cloves. Feel free to use only 3 for a lighter aroma, or 10 cloves for maximum garlic flavor.
- Salted butter: Set the butter out to soften so it becomes easier to mix and spread. If you’re using unsalted butter, add 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
- Herbs: A mix of fresh parsley and Italian seasoning adds visual interest and a delicious, herby flavor.
- Red pepper flakes add a hint of heat and spiciness to the garlic butter.
- Parmesan cheese: For the best taste, shred the parmesan freshly from a block of cheese. Pre-grated parmesan cheese is convenient but can end up a bit dry.
Subsitutions
- Cheese: Feel free to substitute the parmesan for your favorite cheese. Mozzarella, cheddar, or Fontina cheese are tasty choices.
- Garlic powder: You can use garlic powder if you don’t have fresh garlic cloves available. Add 2 teaspoons of garlic powder.
- Herbs: Basil, oregano, chives, and arugula are great substitutes for parsley.
How to make garlic bread with baguette
Garlic bread is probably the easiest side dish there is. And this baguette garlic bread is no exception! Let’s go over the instructions step-by-step!
1. Slice baguette
Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the bread into 1-inch / 2.5 cm slices, being careful not to slice all the way through the bread.
2. Mix garlic herb butter
In a small bowl, whisk together the softened butter, minced garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, and parmesan cheese until well combined.
3. Stuff the baguette with mixture
Using a butter knife or a small offset spatula, generously spread the garlic mixture into the slits of the baguette loaf.
4. Bake baguette
Place the baguette onto the baking sheet, wrap the bread in the foil, and bake for 10 minutes.
Then remove the foil and continue baking for another 5 minutes until the bread becomes crispy.
Cooking tips
I want to share a few simple tips to ensure your French baguette garlic bread turns out just the way you like it.
- Use a sharp serrated knife when cutting your baguette for the best results.
- Slice the baguette evenly: When cutting the loaf, go slowly and slice the bread as evenly as possible. This will help with even baking and broiling.
- Don’t cut all the way down when slicing the bread. Otherwise, it’ll fall apart. Stop once you see the bottom crust.
- Get the garlic butter into every nook and cranny: Be sure to slather the garlic butter all the way to the bottom of the sliced baguette for garlicky flavor in every bite.
- Wrap the baguette in foil for the first 15 minutes of baking: this will protect the bread from drying out and keep the inside moist and gooey. Plus, it helps to keep your pan nice and clean.
- Cut down cook time: If you want to speed up the process, skip the baking and broil the bread for 3 to 4 minutes. The bottom will remain soft, but the top will be crispy, and that’s perfectly fine.

Make-ahead
You may assemble the garlic bread baguette 1 day in advance to save on time. Wrap the loaf tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to bake.
Preparing the bread ahead of time will create an even better-tasting bread because the ingredients have time to mingle and seep into the bread.
Storage instructions
How to store baguette garlic bread
Garlic baguette tastes best right out of the oven. But in case you have leftovers, place the baguette inside an airtight container or zip-top bag to prevent the loaf from drying out.
Refrigerate for up to 2 days.
Reheat garlic bread
To reheat, wrap the bread loosely with foil. Heat at 350°F for 8 to 10 minutes until warmed through and crisp.
I don’t recommend reheating garlic bread in the microwave because it dries out the baguette and creates a hard, chewy texture.
Freeze garlic bread baguette
You can freeze baguette garlic bread before or after baking. Here is what you need to know:
- Freeze before baking: Place the sliced, buttered garlic baguette on a sheet pan in the freezer. Once frozen, wrap the loaf in 2 layers of plastic wrap and heavy-duty foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Remove the wrapping and put the bread on a baking sheet to bake. Bake as directed, adding about 5 minutes to the baking time since it’s frozen.
- Freeze leftovers: Wrap individual slices in wax paper or foil and put them into a freezer bag or airtight container. Freeze for up to 4 months. To bake, remove the wrapping and place the slices on a baking sheet. Bake at 350°F until hot and crispy.
FAQ
Can I use minced garlic instead of fresh garlic?
No, I don’t recommend using minced garlic from the jar. Prepared garlic tastes different, which will affect the overall flavor of the bread. For the best results, use fresh garlic cloves.
What other types of bread can I use?
Sourdough bread, French bread, Italian bread, and ciabatta are delicious, crusty breads that will work well here.
Can I make vegan baguette garlic bread?
Sure! Simply replace the butter with a vegan butter and swap the parmesan for a vegan cheese substitute, or omit it altogether. It will still taste scrumptious.
