How do I make my house smell like Christmas?

Christmas is only days away, and I’m already soooo excited! Aside from beautiful decorations and delicious foods, the holiday season is defined by memorable scents.

Freshly baked cookies from the oven. Snow-covered pine trees. A crackling fireplace. Cozy flannel pajamas and a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

But you don’t have to light an actual fire or roll out cookie dough to enjoy these holiday aromas. The festive Christmas diffuser blends I’ve curated for you will get you in the holiday spirit as fast as you can start your diffuser. I promise they are all Santa-approved!

essential oils that smell like Christmas

What essential oils make a Christmas scent?

What does Christmas smell like to you? To me, essential oils that smell like Christmas fall into one of these groups:

  • Wood oils smell as invigorating as a faraway winter forest. Conifer oils like pine, cedarwood, spruce, and fir belong to this group.
  • Spice: Whether it’s the smell of a gingerbread house or snickerdoodle cookie, spices such as cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg and are part of the holiday roster.
  • Citrus: Citrus trees bear their fruits during the winter months. No wonder we associate the smell of oranges, tangerines, and kumquat with the holiday season.
  • Resins: Sweet, resinous scents like vanilla, copaiba, tonka bean, or Balsam of Peru evoke the smell of delicious holiday treats and candy.
  • Fresh: And let’s not forget about those cold and frosty scents. Peppermint and eucalyptus are great choices to create a chilly impression.

How to use Christmas diffuser blends

Now that you have DIY Christmas diffuser blends, it’s time to get diffusing! It’s really easy. If you’ve never diffused essential oils before, allow me to show you how to do it:

  1. Start by adding water to the machine’s container.
  2. Next, add your diffuser blend of choice. You can directly drop the oils into the water.
  3. Switch the device on and enjoy the Christmas scent.
  4. Place the diffuser in any room you want to fragrance.

How many drops of essential oil do you put in a diffuser?

For a 100 ml diffuser, 3 to 10 drops are a good starting point. If you’re using a scent for the first time, use less to see how you enjoy the smell.

Of course, you can adjust the amount to your personal preferences and according to the room size. Simply increase the drop count to aromatize larger spaces.

Do you put hot or cold water in an essential oil diffuser?

Use warm, distilled water for the best diffusion. Ensure the water is lukewarm, not hot or boiling, otherwise, the composition of the oils might change.

How much water do I put in my diffuser?

Most oil diffusers usually hold 100 ml / 3.5 fl oz water.

FAQs

Can I use these Christmas essential oil blends for soap?

Yes, you can use these Christmas blends to scent holiday-themed soap. However, there’s one adjustment you must make to ensure the blends are safe for skin care. Be sure to substitute cinnamon bark with cinnamon leaf essential oil or copaiba essential oil in case of sensitive skin.

Cinnamon bark is very irritating and can lead to redness, rashes, and burns. Cinnamon leaf and copaiba are milder.

You also want to increase the amount of oils. To fragrance 4 oz / 115 g soap, you need approximately 40 drops / 2 g / 0.07 oz essential oils.

If you need some inspiration, have a look at my Christmas soap recipes like pine soap, frosted cranberry soap, cinnamon soap, gingerbread soap, and layered candy cane soap.

Can I use the Christmas essential oil blends for candles?

Sure! My holiday essential oil recipes are perfect to scent candles. To get a good hot and cold scent throw, increase the quantities. You’ll need around 140 to 240 drops / 7 to 12 g / 0.24 – 0.42 oz to scent one 8-oz soy candle.

We also have a few Christmas candle recipes on the blog, such as these frosted cranberry candles, pine candle, gingerbread tea lights, and cinnamon candles.

How do you store Christmas essential oils?

If you really love one of these holiday blends and want to make a larger batch, you can certainly do so. I recommend adding the essential oils into a 0.17-oz / 5 ml amber glass bottle. Label the bottle and store it in a cool, dark location without exposure to sunlight.
