DIY cleansing mud

The base is made of Ghassoul mud, a clay that’s rich in minerals and anti-bacterial. Blended into this mud are rose and geranium floral waters to moisturize, as well as sandalwood and red mandarin essential oils.

Grapeseed oil is light oil that doesn’t grease the skin and provides a nourishing boost of antioxidant vitamin E. The addition of finely ground coffee helps to exfoliate gently, which I recommend skipping if your skin is very irritated. You can download the recipe and a pretty printable label at the end of this post.

DIY Cleansing Mud Recipe

Yield: 1/3 cup
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Difficulty: easy

Manuka honey is made from the New Zealand tea tree (manuka myrtle). This honey has strong anti-bacterial properties and a high concentration of minerals, vitamins, and flavonoids. If you prefer to make the cleansing mud vegan, use glycerin instead of honey. You can also switch the sandalwood essential oil for lavender essential oil.

Materials

  • 3 tbsp manuka honey or 1 1/2 tbsp glycerin
  • 1 1/2 tbsp rosewater
  • 1 1/2 tbsp geranium floral water
  • 7 – 9 tbsp Ghassoul (Rhassoul) clay
  • 2 tbsp grapeseed oil
  • finely ground coffee (optional) If you want to enhance the peeling
  • 5 drops of sandalwood essential oil
  • 5 drops red mandarin essential oil

Tools

Instructions

  1. Combine the liquid ingredients. In a small mixing bowl, stir together the honey, rosewater and geranium floral water.
  2. Add the clay. Using a small whisk, mix the clay with liquid ingredients. Optionally, incorporate the ground coffee.
  3. Add the grapeseed oil and essential oils. Stir the grapeseed oil and essential oil of your choice into the mud cleanser.

Notes

How to use the DIY deep cleansing mud

You can use the cleansing mud daily, I recommend in the evening. Wet your face with warm water to open the pores. Then apply a small amount of the DIY deep cleansing mud and massage into your skin. After cleansing, rinse off mud and gently pat your face with a towel until it’s dry.

Storage & shelf life

Store up to six months in a light- and air-tight container. Instead of using your fingers, take out the cleansing mud with a spoon or small spatula to prolong its shelf life.

Printable Label

Print the label on DIN A4 or letter size self-adhesive or sticker paper and cut out along the grey outline. Adhere the label to your container. The label comes in different sizes, giving you more options when choosing a jar or container.

We recommend printing the labels on self-adhesive vinyl sheets. Vinyl sheets are water-resistant and will ensure the label stays pretty, and the colours don’t come off when exposed to water or humidity.

Vinyl sheets can be found in printing shops or online. They are available for inkjet as well as for laser printers and can be used in the same way as regular printing paper. We used Photo Paper Direct’s A4 Inkjet Creative Vinyl Stickers Matt to print our labels.
