Do you miss your friend and want to send her a self care package? Because same. My best friend and I live in different towns several hours apart. With jobs and kids, we can’t see each other as often as we’d like. Instead, we mail each other a monthly long distance best friend care package to share support and a little happiness.

Self care packages are a thoughtful way to stay connected with your friends and loved ones. With social distancing in full effect, it’s a good time for sharing my best friend care package ideas. We talk about good things to put in a care package and how to mail your self care gift safely.

Self care is the act of caring for your body, mind and soul. A self care package or pamper kit is a gift full of goods that are chosen with self care in mind. A DIY self care packages is a wonderful present for birthdays, holidays, to say thank you or show appreciation.

Who can I send a homemade self care package to?

Honestly, everyone needs a little self care in once in a while, even more so in times of social distancing. It’s wonderful to receive a DIY wellness box, even just a tiny self care kit. Sometimes you don’t have to look far. Your neighbour will be delighted to find a nice DIY self care package gift on her doorstep.

What is in a care package? There’s no right or wrong when it comes to making a self care package. A wellness kit can consist of bath and skincare products, candles, food and beverages, and other items that provide relaxation and comfort.

The self care gift should be tailored to your recipient and what they like. A self care package for guys will probably include different things than care package ideas for mom. My best tip is to create a personalized gift with 3 to 5 items they will actually use.

And how do you make a cute care package? With printable labels and gift tags, of course! The printables fit on letter-size and A4 paper. I recommend xy or xy. If regular printer paper is all you have, use it.

After printing, cut the card out, add a few words of your own and tuck it in.

How to assemble and mail a self care package

Sending a self care package to friends and family isn’t much different than mailing other shipments. I put together a few shipping tips that help your parcel arrive in good condition.

Shipping box

Select a sturdy cardboard box for shipping your care package ideas. The box should be spacious enough to hold all items and have no tears. If it’s possible to deliver the gift in person, make an open care basket.

To make the box prettier, decorate the inside of the box with gift wrap.

Packaging materials

Use packaging materials to ensure your wellness gift idea arrives safely at its destination.

newspaper: not the pretties filler but cheap and gets the job done
bubble wrap and foam peanuts: I always collect packaging material from packages I receive and reuse them.
crinkle paper: A gorgeous and eco-friendly way to pad your goodies.
gift wrap: Reusing pre-loved gift wrap as stuffing paper is a pretty idea for what to do with old gift wrap.

Breakables

How do you package breakables? These are my easy packing tips for breakables and fragile items:

Use a box that provides plenty of space for your item and packaging materials.
Fill hollow items (e.g. a cup, vase, bowl), so that outside pressure doesn’t cause them to break inwards.
First lay the bottom of the box with packaging materials. Then place your gifts carefully inside.
Wrap the item properly and secure it with tape.
Stuff the entire box with packaging materials, so there is no room for things to move around.
Write “fragile” on the box or apply a label.

Using these tips will help your self care package reach your friend or family member in one piece.

Liquids

Can I mail liquids? The short answer is yes, you can ship liquids. When shipping liquids, you want to avoid leaking. Here are 3 simple tips for how to ship liquids safely:

Make sure the bottle or container is tightly closed.
Put the liquid in a waterproof bag.
Secure the liquid in the cardboard box with lots of packaging materials.

Some carriers have restrictions of liquids that are considered flammable (e.g. spirits or perfume.) If you’re in doubt check with the courier service to find out what is allowed.

Heat & weather

Heat can be an issue if you or the recipient live in a hot state. Some products, for example bath melts or chocolate, might melt in transit. If that’s the case either avoid products that melt easily or package them in such a way that it won’t affect the other items.
